Family Portraits
The goal of my photography business is to capture moments in life that can be enjoyed for generations to come. Everyone’s lives are busy and, all too easily, the time-sensitive periods pass us by - childhood, young adulthood, family life. By pausing, briefly, to record certain elements on print, we gain the ability to pin down moments that are worth holding onto. Home movies and videos are great but, for me, there is something special about a still photo. Holding a photograph in my hand opens a door in my mind, taking me immediately back to when the moment was captured. Surprisingly, it is not always the “perfect” portrait that most appeals to me but often the casual, unguarded image that can capture a story within just one frame.
I have a portrait of my parents. It sits without fanfare on the bookshelf in my reading room. My mom is in mid-laugh, my dad saying something funny in her ear. I adore this picture. It captures many things. A relationship. A dynamic. A lifetime of stories. Yet it is just one picture. I have countless photographs like these, images of the people, pets, and places that I have loved. These portraits, more than anything else, tell my life story. In 60 years, I will certainly be gone ... but not these photographs.
This isn’t a plug for me, for Artemis Photography, this is simply a plug to shoot pictures of the people that move you. If you can't capture those images yourself, then please hire someone. Childhood goes by - phooosh - fast. Heck, life goes by fast. Please record some of that time on film. I love, love, love family portraits. They don’t have to be stiff. They don’t have to be formal. They just have to be taken.
